Biei is only about 75km away!
120 is just nuts, that means it is farther away than Sapporo.

Thanks guys, it was a pretty amazing experience!

The evening was organized for us free of charge. The event was the march banquet for the Soroptimist society, and they invited us along!

We have heard of previous gaijins attending the event, but it's definitely not a frequent occurrence. We feel pretty honoured!!

The bulging tummy is probably a symbol of manliness, or male prowess, Ron. At least from what we've been told. Nice to see you checking in on our blog! =)

An amazing invitation and insight into Japanese traditions. Who provided the clothing and covered the costs of the preparations? Was this a frequent or rare occasion for local gaijins?
The four of you looked great!!

I like how Shōchū comes in cartons. Are they lined with wax or plastic and foil? I guess wax would dissolve.
You guys have been badfishies with updating! Come on now. I suppose I've been a lurker, though, constantly checking and not commenting.
Has the winter started to let up yet?

I've already said it elsewhere, but let it be memorialized again here. I had a great time w/ you guys. Glad I got to bring in the New Year w/ you. Never would've even heard about the balloon bit if you hadn't dragged me down there.

Will try to make it back up to Takikawa to buy you guys. And of course, LMK if you're ever back down in this part o' the world again :) You have to come to Utsunomiya for gyoza sometime!

Hey guys! Rad to see you have a blog too, I'm gonna add a link to here on my page if it's cool? It was really nice to meet you guys, any friend of Tora-san is a friend of mine. I'm particularly happy to hear that the balloons were "eco-friendly" and that we don't have to worry about the poor innocent turtles :) I'm jealous of all the sweet pictures you guys took while you were here, as soon as I get my back-pay from my former (now bankrupt) company I'll be sure to head down to Aki-ba and pick up a new camera so I don't have to rely on my cell phone to capture my precious memories. Anyway, glad the trip back was safe and quick, let me know when you guys are in town again!

Thanks for stopping by & good luck in your travels!!

We are planning a trip down to Tokyo for New Years. We'll be traveling for 2 days by train for under $100 CAN. Cheap travel is definitely possible in Asia.

Best,

Kevin & Cathy

Natsukashii ne !! (Nostalgic)

Your story makes me jealous! I miss all these places so much.

PS: The Oki-Doki 30 minutes south of Takikawa by car is much bigger and called "Doki-Doki" for some reason which describes the sound of your heart beat in Japanese. If you want a better selection, check that place out for sure.

And if you ever want a good spicy meal for a cold winter day, hit up "Mama's Kitchen" in the middle of nowhere. Hard to find, ask a student or Travis.

The Oki-Doki is one of our favourite stores here in Takikawa. So far we have bought a heater, a humidifier, a Suki-Yaki grill, some dinnerware, a tripod, some shelves and maybe soon a guitar!

Sapporo is very fun. It's definitely an adventure being in the big city, but its so nice to live in a relaxing town where everything is walking distance (though heavy snow greatly reduces the radius of "walking distance"...)

Thanks for the comments guys,
